Director's Note

At the time when we are setting up our own Centre for Entrepreneurship and Incubation at DA-IICT -- or CEID -- students may rightly ask: What is entrepreneurship?

In my opinion, entrepreneurship is about having full confidence in oneself to decide to shape one’s own future, to refuse the dulling security of an anonymous job in a large company, and to accept gladly all the challenges that life offers.

From the day I joined DA-IICT, I have personally felt the need to establish such an entrepreneurship and incubation centre here. I have seen the successful working of such a centre at IIT Bombay, and I have seen how it helps youngsters to bring out the best in them in terms of creativity, innovation, managerial ability and -- last but not least -- facing up to difficult challenges.

There are several reasons why I feel that in the coming years DA-IICT can become a hub for entrepreneurial activity. One is simply that we are located in the heartland of a part of India which has been renowned for centuries for its entrepreneurial spirit and culture. Another equally important reason for my optimism is that we have expertise in precisely those areas of technology which offer the maximum scope for entrepreneurial activity today. And the third reason, of course, is my faith in the students of DA-IICT!

An important function of the centre would be to provide incubation support to start-up ventures of our fresh graduates. This may include crucial infrastructure support, as well as the mentoring, guidance and networking which are crucial to such a start-up. We have received positive feedback from several like-minded organizations about their willingness to guide the technology start-ups of our students.

In the coming years, I expect a growing CEID to make a significant contribution to the success and the reputation of this institute and its students. I am sure that more and more students at DA-IICT will come to rely of CEID as a source of new ideas and information, a nurturing and vibrant atmosphere -- and also crucial initial support for entrepreneurial ventures of students. By setting up this centre, we are making visible the institute's strong commitment towards student entrepreneurship.

I congratulate and thank the CEID team for having brought to fruition these ideas, and offer my best wishes to all of you. May all your creative abilities find full expression at CEID -- and may this “seed” grow into a mighty tree!
